To a beginner watching a football game, the rules may seem foreign and without logic – but to fans that are familiar with the game, the rules are clear and the rules of the game are set in stone. Here are some basic concepts of the rules of football that a beginner fan can learn to help increase the understanding of the game that is being played:

First, let’s talk about the players within the game of football. Through the game, there are two teams that are competing against each other. Through each team on the field there are eleven players. On each of these teams with eleven players, there are various positions which are played by these players.

How long is the game of football? The average game of football lasts ninety minutes. Throughout these ninety minutes there are two ‘halves’ throughout the football game. These halves are each forty five minutes in length. The game will often last longer than ninety minutes because of minutes that have been added to the game, in the judgment of the referee for penalties and other times when the game may have been stopped. The referee is the only individual within the game that is allowed to make these calls, although there are other officials through the field that can assist the referee and bring note to aspects which are being played through the field. It is always the referee who makes the final call when it comes to the game of football being played on the field.

When it comes to the size of the field that is being played on, there are also certain stipulations. The size of the field must be in the range of ninety to one hundred twenty meters, and forty five to ninety meters in order to be in accordance with local football regulations.
